How to Know When to Seek a Private Home Health Aide
3 Minute ReadFor many of our clients, seeking at-home senior care for a loved one is not an easy decision. Simply acknowledging that mom may be struggling a bit or your husband needs help is the last thing most family members want to do. And then there’s the dilemma of the loved one who is determined to continue his or her independence, consistently resisting the mere mention of having a “senior nanny” offer any help.
At LifeWorx, when we are contacted by the family members who are inquiring for their loved one, we ask questions that help us all understand what is important to the loved one and your family members. Our questions help determine if this is, in fact, the right time to seek private nursing care at home. The old adage that timing is everything rings true.
Our goal is always to understand each person’s concern. We want each person to feel understood and validated whenever they speak. When the person needing care is present, we ask questions delicately to honor and respect the dignity of the elderly. When we have that same discussion with family members, we strive to create a safe environment where there is no judgment and only understanding of this difficult and transitional time in their lives.
Some of our clients come to us as a last resort, when it’s clear that there is no other choice and their loved one requires professional help. In other instances many of our clients are wondering, Is this the right time? Below are some questions to explore as you navigate this decision, determine if it’s the right time and decide the next action steps.
1. Is your loved one still tending to their own personal care, basic grooming, desire to dress and bathing. Does he or she care about appearance at all?
2. How does your loved one get around? Is she spry or very tentative in her motions? If he’s starting to decline offers to go places, or is spending more time at home than usual, this could be a sign that he is becoming afraid to fall while walking in unfamiliar places.
3. If she lives alone, do you have any concerns about her safety there? Does he still hear well in the case of a fire alarm? Would she recognize the smell of smoke or gas in the home? If he were to get injured at home, what do you have in place as a means for him to contact help?
While these questions aren’t exhaustive, they’ll get you started in making the best decision for your family. Also, please note that memory issues don’t necessarily indicate your loved one needs help. Some memory loss is expected for an aging person. However, don’t ignore your gut if you are a little distressed about them forgetting boiling water on a stove or remembering to eat and/or take meds. Even if there is a little voice in your head saying, “Mom or dad needs help”, take it seriously. Whether a family member is able to fill that role temporarily or permanently, or you need private nursing care at home, we at LifeWorx are here as a resource during this challenging transition for all.
