What are The Differences Between Home Health Care and Home Care?

2 Minute Read
By Jessica Deng

When it comes to aging in place, seniors may often need assistance with daily living activities. LifeWorx offers several elder care home care services providing a range of services for individuals who require assistance with activities of daily living. Two common types of elder home care services are home health care and non-medical home care. Both types of home care provide support in-home, but they serve different purposes. Understanding the differences between the two can help you choose the best care for your loved one.

Home Health Care

WHAT
This meets the needs of individuals requiring medical assistance at home – and home health care is prescribed by an attending doctor.

Home health care keeps older adults who are recovering from injuries or managing acute or chronic health conditions where they want to be: at home.

DURATION
Usually temporary but can be received for as long as you qualify.

SERVICES
Home health care services may include: medication administration, pain management, wound care, post-operative rehabilitation, care for catheters, ventilators, etc.

WHO CAN RECEIVE HOME HEALTH CARE?
People of all ages; newborns, but this type of care is mostly used for ages 65 and older.

ACCEPTED FORMS OF PAYMENT
medicare, medicaid, medigap, Veteran’s benefits, and private pay.

Non-Medical Home Care

WHAT
Non-medical home care is often referred to “transitional care” or “private duty” care. Non-Medical home care is usually provided by caregivers, certified nursing aides, and home health aides.

Non-medical home care may benefit seniors who need day-to-day assistance at home and companionship, but not medical support.

DURATION
Non-medical home care can be short term or long term.

SERVICES
Non-medical in-home care may include services such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, respite care, companion care, etc.

WHO CAN RECEIVE NON-MEDICAL HOME CARE?
People of all ages, but mostly older adults who need some help to remain at home safely and independently.

ACCEPTED FORMS OF PAYMENT
Some medical and long-term care insurance, private and Veteran’s benefits.
