Why Eat Organic?

There is an old familiar saying that says "you are what you eat." If that's true, then one quick glance at the packaging on the supermarket shelf indicates that most of us can't even pronounce our names. Fortunately, it is a problem that is relatively easy to solve, and it starts with the items we are placing in our baskets when we go shopping.

  • Organic fruits and vegetables are naturally ripened and no CO2 or Nitrogen is used to artificially ripen them before they are ready. This helps preserve their overall nutritional value. Indeed, organic produces is higher in vitamin C, antioxidants, calcium, iron, chromium, and magnesium.
  • When it comes to meat products, more research is showing that the antibiotics and synthetic hormones used to raise beef, pork, and poultry are a significant concern. There is some research to suggest that these additives are responsible for early onset puberty.
  • It is better for the environment. Organic food is grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This means that the environmental impact is minimal and the runoff from organic fields does not pollute the environment.
  • Finally, organic foods contain far fewer preservatives and additives than other foods. In order to be certified organic by the USDA, foods must meet strict guidelines regulating this. When it comes to eating organic, make sure that the food your purchase carries the USDA label.
