The Perfect Nanny

Between bedtimes and boo boos, being a nanny is hard work. If you are up for the challenge and are willing to give it everything you have to give, then the rewards of your career choice can be endless.

Being a great nanny doesn't mean you have to be Mary Poppins. It's wonderful if you are, but most nannies work their entire careers to achieve that level of skill. Being a great nanny means many things, and if you follow these tips, you'll be "The perfect nanny" in no time at all.

★ Be punctual. Of all the skills you need to possess, being on time is one of the most important. Whether it's your starting time in the morning or a pick-up from an after school event, your schedule needs to run with a level of precision that would make a Swiss watchmaker envious.

★ Become a great communicator. Whether you are reading the children a bedtime story, providing a report on a child's progress in school, or listening to instructions from parents, make sure that you can communicate effectively and succinctly.

★ Be honest. Because parents are entrusting you with their most valuable assets, they need to know they can trust you implicitly. Remember, the truth may hurt for a little while, but a lie will sting forever.

★ Be tight lipped. Gossip is a cancer that can destroy relationships, erode trust, and harm the children you are caring for. Family business should never be discussed outside of the home, and you should never engage in discussions about other people's families.

★ Don't worry, be happy. This is a good mantra to live your life by. By remaining positive, your enthusiasm and encouragement will shine through and have a positive impact on the children and people around you.

★ Think outside the box and the job description. You are a bright, creative, and fun person. Allow yourself the freedom to show that side of your personality by helping out wherever you can.

★ Give it all you have. As with any career, the more you give, the more you will receive. If you are not giving 100% every day, then you are not giving the job the attention it requires.

★ Bottom line: Being a great nanny means doing the job to the best of your ability. It means pushing your abilities beyond everything you have ever imagined. When you do that, anything is possible.
