Driving with Children

As a nanny working through LifeWorx, you must have a valid driver’s license and car (except within New York City). The main purpose of this is to make sure you have a reliable and consistent way of getting to work, but that’s not the only reason. Nannies are often required by their employer to drive their kids to and from school, as well as to their various activities. When driving with children, it is important to remember certain tips so that everyone remains safe:

1.      Never Leave the Children in the Car Unattended- If you need to leave the car for any reason, you should never leave without the children. It is unsafe for them to be alone in a public area like a parking lot because of strangers. In addition, should a child experience a health problem or injury, you would not be able to help them.  For example, what if it gets too hot in the car? Children’s body temperature rises about 5 times faster than that of an adult, and many children die every year from heatstroke. Always bring the child with you so that you can keep him/her safe at all times.

2.      Make Sure the Children Have Appropriate Car Seats- Children of different ages have different car seats that are suitable for them. So make sure you know which car seat is for which child. Visit for more information. In addition, make sure you are well versed in properly putting the children into their car seats to prevent injury should there be any sort of accident.

3.      Bring Entertainment and Snacks- We all know that kids can get bored very easily. This can lead to complaining, fights, restlessness etc. In order to help prevent this and keep the children engaged, you should probably bring some small, healthy snacks like carrot sticks and a juice box along for the ride. In addition, bringing a video game, coloring book, small toys or books can help distract the child while you make your way from point A to point B. Even books on tape can be a good source of entertainment for children.

4.      Be Aware, Be Focused and Be Responsible- At the end of the day, even with all these tips, the most important factor of the children’s safety is you. Keep your eyes on the road, stay focused and obey the rules of the road. Safe driving with children requires the ability to stay focused on your driving, while also tuned into the kids and their needs. If a child gets too restless or distracting, don’t be hesitant to pull over and deal with the situation before heading on the road again. Safety always comes first.
